20 questions to ask your child this week

Use two or three a day, woven into normal conversation. Follow any answer with: Why? · Can you give me an example? · Tell me more. Don’t correct mid-answer, don’t quiz, don’t grade.

At the dinner table

  1. 1What was the best part of today — and what made it the best?
  2. 2If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be? Why?
  3. 3Would you rather have recess twice a day, or finish school an hour earlier? Convince me.
  4. 4What do you think Grandma would say about that?
  5. 5Has anything like that ever happened to you? Tell me about it.

On the way — car, bus, MRT

  1. 6What do you think is happening over there?
  2. 7Why do you think they built it like that?
  3. 8If you were in charge of the MRT for one day, what would you do?
  4. 9How do you think that person is feeling? What makes you say so?
  5. 10What would you do if that happened to you?

About whatever they're watching or reading

  1. 11What do you think happens next?
  2. 12Did she make the right choice? Why or why not?
  3. 13Do you agree with what he said?
  4. 14Can you give me an example — from the show, or from real life?
  5. 15What was it really about, in one sentence?

In Mandarin — everyday moments

  1. 16你今天最开心的事是什么?为什么? — What made you happiest today? Why?
  2. 17你觉得这个好吃吗?为什么? — Do you think this is tasty? Why?
  3. 18如果是你,你会怎么做? — If it were you, what would you do?
  4. 19你可以举个例子吗? — Can you give me an example?
  5. 20后来呢? — And then what happened?
