The P5 oral, on one page
What happens in the room, the three things only your school can tell you, and a week that actually helps. There is no separate syllabus for the school oral and no list of set topics — it tests what the PSLE oral tests, a year early and at far lower stakes.
1 · What happens — about ten minutes, one-to-one with a teacher
English
- ·Reading aloud — a short passage, marked on accuracy, fluency and expression.
- ·Conversation — from a photograph of an everyday scene. What's happening in it, then your child's own opinions and experiences.
Chinese 华文
- ·朗读 — reading a passage aloud.
- ·会话 — conversation from a short video clip (短片). New at P5: it was a picture from P1 to P4.
Reading aloud is over a third of the oral mark — not a warm-up. It is also the half that improves fastest, because it responds to plain repetition. The conversation rewards one habit above all: an answer, a reason, an example.
2 · Three questions to ask your school
The format above is the same almost everywhere. These three are not, and most schools don’t publish them — one email to the form teacher is the only way to find out.
- 1“When is the P5 oral, and is it part of the year-end exam or its own assessment?”Most schools put it in the year-end exam. A good number don't — some run it as a term assessment, months earlier.
- 2“Is the oral face-to-face, or recorded?”Several schools now record part or all of it. It's a different skill, and worth practising into a microphone first.
- 3“Which paper does the oral count towards, and what weighting?”Roughly a fifth of the language grade in most schools — but more than half the subject on Foundation Mother Tongue.
3 · A week that actually helps
- Every dayFive minutes reading aloud — English one day, Chinese the next. Read it twice; the second time with feeling.
- Twice a weekWatch a short video clip together. Pause it. Ask: what happened? What did you think of it? Has anything like that happened to you?
- At dinnerOne question that can't be answered in a word. Follow any answer with “Why?” or “Can you give me an example?”
- OnceRecord thirty seconds on a phone and play it back. Say nothing. Children fix their own mumbling faster than they fix yours.
- The night beforeNothing at all. It's a conversation, not a trial — and that's the message worth sending this year.
Two things worth knowing. On Foundation Mother Tongue the oral is more than half the whole subject — the highest-stakes oral in primary school. Higher Mother Tongue has no oral at P5 at all, so those children sit an oral only for English.
