The P.E.E.L. Framework for PSLE Chinese Oral: Weak vs Strong Answers
Point, Explain, Example, Link — one framework that works for every conversation question PSLE throws at your child. Worked against the real 2025 Day 1 exam question, with eight transition phrases your child should know by heart.
One framework, every opinion question
Singapore Chinese tutors universally teach structured answer frameworks, and P.E.E.L. is the most widely used for opinion and suggestion questions. It is specifically designed for conversation Q2 (experience) and Q3 (opinion). Master this one framework and your child has a repeatable shape for any question the examiner can throw at them.
One important clarification: P.E.E.L. is for the conversation component only. It does not apply to reading aloud (朗读), which is assessed purely on pronunciation, fluency, expression and accuracy — there is no answer structure to follow there.
The four steps
Point · 观点
State your position clearly in one sentence. Agree or disagree — either is fine, but commit to a stance.
Explain · 解释
Give your reasoning. Why do you think this? One clear reason is better than three shallow ones.
Example · 例子
A concrete personal example. Who, when, what happened. Specific beats generic every time.
Link · 总结
Summarise and connect back to the theme. A single sentence is enough to close the loop.
Weak answer vs strong answer — the same question
Question: “帮助别人,自己也能学到新知识。你同意吗?” (Helping others also helps you learn. Do you agree?) — 2025 PSLE Day 1.
Weak answer ~5/10
“我同意。帮助别人很好。我们应该帮助别人。”
“I agree. Helping others is good. We should help others.”
No reasoning. No example. No structure. Under 20 characters. The examiner will probe further, but the student has shown no depth.
Strong answer ~9/10
“我同意这个说法。首先,帮助别人的时候,我们会学到新的技能。比如,我曾经教同学做数学题,在教他的过程中,我对那些题目的理解也更深了。其次,帮助别人可以增进友谊,让大家的关系更好。总的来说,助人为乐不仅对别人有好处,对自己也是一种成长。”
“I agree. Firstly, when we help others we learn new skills. For example, I once taught a classmate maths, and through teaching him my own understanding deepened. Secondly, helping others strengthens friendships. Overall, helping others benefits ourselves too — it is a form of growth.”
P = Clear stance. E = Two reasons with connectors. E = Personal anecdote with detail. L = Summary linking back to the topic.
The eight transition phrases your child should know by heart
Connectors do two things at once: they make the answer sound structured to the examiner, and they buy your child three seconds of thinking time before the next clause. Drill these eight until they come out automatically.
| 中文 | Pinyin | English | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 首先 | shǒu xiān | firstly | Starting the first reason |
| 其次 | qí cì | secondly | Adding the next reason |
| 此外 | cǐ wài | moreover | Adding another point |
| 因为……所以…… | yīn wèi…suǒ yǐ… | because…therefore… | Giving reasons |
| 虽然……但是…… | suī rán…dàn shì… | although…but… | Acknowledging the other side |
| 不但……而且…… | bú dàn…ér qiě… | not only…but also… | Building on a point |
| 总的来说 | zǒng de lái shuō | overall / in summary | Wrapping up |
| 我相信只要…… | wǒ xiāng xìn zhǐ yào… | I believe as long as… | A hopeful conclusion |
The benchmark: if your child can sustain a 60-second answer with two examples and at least two connectors from this list, they are on track for a strong conversation score.
