Chinese oral practice in Primary 5: comfort first, drills later

For most children in English-speaking homes, the Chinese oral gap isn’t vocabulary — it’s that 华文 lives in the classroom and nowhere else. A child can know the words for the topic and still freeze, because speaking Mandarin to an adult feels like a performance rather than a conversation.

That gap has a treatment, and it isn’t assessment books: airtime. Regular, low-stakes minutes of actually using the language — which is exactly what a P5 year is for, because comfort can’t be compressed into a P6 intensive.

The exam, briefly

What Chinese oral practice is preparing for

The Chinese oral (口试) has two parts: 朗读 — reading a passage aloud — and 会话, a conversation that starts from a short video clip (短片) and moves into your child’s own views and experiences. Together they carry a quarter of the Chinese grade at the PSLE. Your child’s P5 school exams will usually include a version of both, which makes P5 a year of free rehearsals — the format explained in full is in our Chinese oral guide.

The weekly rhythm

P5 Chinese oral practice that doesn't feel like practice

Five habits, none of which involve a desk. Pick the two or three that fit your family’s week — consistency beats coverage.

One 华文 moment a day

2 minutes

Ask about their day, the food, the show — one real exchange in Mandarin. Answers in English (or half-half) are fine; reply warmly and model the Chinese back.

Reading aloud, Chinese days

5 minutes

A few minutes from any Chinese book or their 课本, two or three days a week. Once a week, read the same passage twice — the second time with feeling.

One show or clip together, weekly

20 minutes, once a week

Watch something in Mandarin and talk about it after — the PSLE conversation (会话) is literally 'watch a short clip (短片), then discuss'.

Real-world orders

Free, in passing

Let them order in Mandarin at the hawker centre or speak to 爷爷奶奶 on the phone. Low stakes, real audience.

What to avoid

Two things that quietly make it worse

Both come from the best intentions.

Correcting mid-sentence

A child corrected every time they open their mouth in Mandarin learns the safest answer is the shortest one — the single worst habit for 会话. Respond to the idea; model the right phrasing in your reply instead.

Treating oral like 听写

Spelling lists respond to drilling; speaking doesn’t. The technique work — 朗读 delivery, structured 会话 answers — genuinely earns its place, but in P6, on top of a comfort base. Built the other way round, it produces rehearsed answers from a nervous speaker.

A common worry

What if you don't speak Mandarin yourself?

You don’t need to. The habits above are about giving your child reasons to speak, not about you being the model — grandparents, the hawker uncle and the TV can supply the Mandarin. Imperfect, accented Mandarin from a parent works too; what matters is that speaking it is normal at home. We’ve written more on this in our guide for parents who don’t speak Chinese — and PSLEPrep’s own scorecards are in English, so you can follow your child’s Chinese progress without reading a word of it.

Something to start with tonight

20 questions to ask your child this week

The hardest part of the rhythm above is thinking of something to ask. This is the list we use — dinner-table and in-the-car questions that get a P5 child talking without it feeling like practice. Free, and there is a one-page version you can print and leave on the fridge.

There’s a real oral before the PSLE one

Most P5s sit a Mother Tongue oral inside the end-of-year exams — at many schools in the next few weeks, though some run it as a term assessment instead. The oral mark on its own doesn’t decide your child’s P6 subjects, but it is the closest thing to a free progress report you get before P6. Ten free scored sessions — 朗读 and 会话, marked against the PSLE oral rubrics, with the scorecard in English. No card, no expiry: the rest keep until P6.
