PSLE Chinese Oral video: Helping Others (互相帮助)
A small act of kindness in the school canteen — and the PSLE Chinese oral questions that follow.
Helping others (互相帮助) is a classic 'good values' theme in the PSLE Chinese oral conversation. Watch the clip, then rehearse the examiner's questions and follow-ups so your child learns to describe what happened, share a personal example, and give an opinion in Mandarin — the exact moves the exam rewards.
What happens in the clip
在学校食堂里,一个男生端着餐盘走过来。不小心,他把饭菜打翻了,食物掉了一地。他蹲在地上,觉得很不好意思。旁边一个戴头巾的女同学马上蹲下来帮他捡,另一个男同学也拿来纸巾帮忙擦。最后,三个人坐在一起,两个同学把自己的食物分给了他,大家开开心心地一起吃饭。
In the school canteen a boy carries his tray over and accidentally drops it — food spills everywhere. He crouches down, embarrassed. A girl wearing a headscarf immediately kneels to help him pick it up, and another boy brings tissues to help clean. In the end the three sit together, the two classmates share their own food with him, and they all eat happily together.
The questions the examiner asks
Q1 · Describe the clip
短片里的男生遇到了什么事?旁边的同学怎样帮助他?
What happened to the boy in the clip? How did the classmates nearby help him?
Possible follow-ups
- 你觉得那个男生当时心里是什么感受? — How do you think the boy felt at that moment?
- 同学们的做法有什么值得我们学习的地方? — What can we learn from what the classmates did?
Q2 · Your own experience
你有没有帮助过同学,或接受过同学帮助的经历?请你说一说。
Have you ever helped a classmate, or been helped by one? Tell us about it.
Possible follow-ups
- 帮助别人以后,你的心情怎么样? — How did you feel after helping someone?
- 如果对方不好意思接受帮助,你会怎么做? — If they were too shy to accept help, what would you do?
Q3 · Your opinion
如果看到同学遇到困难,我们应该怎样做?
If we see a classmate in difficulty, what should we do?
Possible follow-ups
- 如果你不太确定怎么帮,你会怎么办? — If you weren't sure how to help, what would you do?
- 帮助别人的时候,要注意些什么呢? — What should we keep in mind when helping others?
What a strong answer includes
- Describe question: name what happened to the boy and the specific things the classmates did to help.
- Personal question: give a real example of helping or being helped, and how it made you feel.
- Opinion question: say what we should do when a classmate struggles, with a reason that shows good values.

How the PSLE Chinese video conversation works
In the current PSLE Chinese oral exam (华文口试), the conversation section (会话) is based on a short video clip (看录像会话). Your child watches a roughly 30-second clip — with light Mandarin narration that points out the theme — and the examiner then asks a few questions about it.
The questions usually move through three stages:
- Describe what happened — retell the clip in your own words, in full sentences.
- Relate it to your own experience — a real example from your own life.
- Give your opinion — what you think should be done, and why.
The examiner will often ask follow-up questions — a quick 为什么? (why?) or 可以举个例子吗?(can you give an example?). The best answers don't stop at one sentence: they give a reason and a concrete example, and stay in Mandarin throughout. That's exactly what the practice on each clip is designed to build.
