PSLE Chinese Oral video: Online Safety (网上安全)
Would your child know what to do if a stranger messaged them online? Watch the clip and the questions.
Online safety (网上安全) is a common PSLE Chinese oral conversation topic. This page has the video clip, the examiner-style questions and the follow-up questions, plus what a strong answer includes — practical, exam-format practice your child can do at home in Mandarin.
What happens in the clip
A boy sits at the computer chatting with a stranger whose profile is just a question-mark avatar. His older sister walks over, sees what's happening, and quickly stops him. Afterwards his parents sit down with him and talk seriously about staying safe online.
The questions the examiner asks
Q1 · Describe the clip
What danger did the boy face online? How did his sister help him?
Possible follow-ups
— If his sister hadn't noticed, what might have happened?
— Why do you think the stranger asked for his address?
Q2 · Your opinion
What do you think you should watch out for when chatting with strangers online?
Possible follow-ups
— If they claimed to be a primary student too, would you believe them? Why?
— Which personal details should never be shared casually?
Q3 · What would you do?
If someone online asked you for personal details, what would you do?
Possible follow-ups
— Who would you tell first?
— If they kept pestering you, what would you do?
What a strong answer includes
- Describe question: name the danger (a stranger asking for private details) and exactly how the sister helped.
- Opinion question: list what to watch for online and back each point with a reason.
- Action question: say who you'd tell first and what you'd refuse to share — be specific.

How the PSLE Chinese video conversation works
In the current PSLE Chinese oral exam (华文口试), the conversation section (会话) is based on a short video clip (看录像会话). Your child watches a roughly 30-second clip — with light Mandarin narration that points out the theme — and the examiner then asks a few questions about it.
The questions usually move through three stages:
- Describe what happened — retell the clip in your own words, in full sentences.
- Relate it to your own experience — a real example from your own life.
- Give your opinion — what you think should be done, and why.
The examiner will often ask follow-up questions — a quick 为什么? (why?) or 可以举个例子吗?(can you give an example?). The best answers don't stop at one sentence: they give a reason and a concrete example, and stay in Mandarin throughout. That's exactly what the practice on each clip is designed to build.
