PSLE Foundation Tamil oral: marks and how to prepare.

In Foundation Tamil the oral is more than half of the subject. That makes it the single biggest lever on your child’s Tamil result, and the part a short routine at home helps most.

The marks

How much is the Foundation Tamil oral worth?

55 of the subject’s 100 marks: reading aloud is 15 and the conversation about a video clip is 40. At 40 marks, the conversation is worth more than any other paper in the subject.

Foundation Tamil has the same three-paper shape: a 15-mark language paper, the oral (55 marks) and listening comprehension (30 marks). The numbers come from SEAB's Tamil syllabus, whose text could not be read cleanly, and agree with SEAB's exam calendar and a school's table.

What Foundation is

Who takes Foundation Tamil, and who decides?

The school recommends it from P4 results, you choose from the combinations offered, and the school reviews the choice at the end of P5. It is a level, not a label, and MOE says plainly that it is not a disadvantage.

Under Subject-Based Banding, the school recommends a subject combination from your child's P4 end-of-year results and you fill in an option form. Children who pass three or more subjects in P4 are offered four Standard subjects; those who pass two or fewer are offered a choice that can include Foundation subjects. The school reviews the combination at the end of P5 and adjusts it if needed.

Grading

How is Foundation Tamil graded at the PSLE?

On its own scale, AL A to AL C, which count as AL 6 to AL 8 for Secondary 1 posting. Because the oral is 55% of the marks, it decides more of that grade than any other paper.

Foundation subjects are graded AL A to AL C. For Secondary 1 posting these count as AL 6, AL 7 and AL 8. AL A is a raw mark of 75 to 100, AL B is 30 to 74, and AL C is below 30.

Where to focus

Why should the conversation come first?

Forty marks sit on one task: watching a short clip and talking about it. A child who can keep talking, give a reason and add one example from their own life gains more there than anywhere else in the subject.

School briefings describe the conversation as a few questions built on the clip — typically one about the video, one about a related situation or the theme, and one asking for an opinion or a suggestion with reasons — followed by the examiner's follow-up questions. This is how schools prepare pupils, not a published SEAB specification.

A Foundation conversation routine · PSLEPrep’s advice

  1. Three times a week, watch a one-minute everyday clip together.
  2. Ask in English: what happened? Has it happened to you? What do you think, and why?
  3. Your child answers in Tamil. Aim for three or four sentences per answer, not one.
  4. Ask one follow-up after each answer: why, or what happened next?
  5. Record it and listen back once a week. Notice where they stop, not which words were wrong.

The video-conversation guide breaks the three questions down one at a time.

Reading aloud

What about the reading?

It is 15 marks, and it improves fastest with short daily practice: reading a page aloud, pausing at punctuation and carrying on after a slip.

Two 2023 school briefings say the 10 minutes of preparation covers the passage and the video together, and that the clip can be watched more than once in that time. An earlier briefing describes it differently, and SEAB's Tamil syllabus could not be read, so check with your child's school.

Five minutes a day · PSLEPrep’s advice

  1. Read one page of the Tamil textbook or a school passage aloud.
  2. Pause at full stops. A shorter pause at commas.
  3. Correct a slip once and keep going.
  4. Read loudly enough to be heard across the room.
