PSLE Higher Tamil · Checked 30 October 2026
Higher Tamil at the PSLE, and why the oral still matters.
Higher Tamil has no oral of its own. But a child taking it still sits Standard Tamil, oral included, and that is the paper that counts towards the PSLE Score. This page sets out what is published, and what to weigh.
Is there an oral?
Does Higher Tamil have an oral?
No. Higher Tamil is written papers only. The oral your child sits is the Standard Tamil oral, which every child taking Higher Tamil also takes.
Higher Tamil has no oral paper. SEAB's 2026 calendar lists no Higher Mother Tongue oral, and school briefings show none.

School briefings state that Higher Mother Tongue is taken in addition to Standard Mother Tongue, so a pupil taking it still sits the Standard Mother Tongue papers. The oral belongs to Standard Mother Tongue.

What counts
What does Higher Mother Tongue count for?
Not the PSLE Score, which is four subjects with Standard Mother Tongue among them. What MOE does publish is a route into Higher Mother Tongue at Secondary 1.
The PSLE Score is the sum of the Achievement Levels of four subjects: English, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue.
SEAB / MOE sourceSource: MOE — PSLE scoring system
The posting advantage MOE publishes for Higher Mother Tongue is for Higher Chinese, at Special Assistance Plan schools. MOE's pages describe none for Higher Malay or Higher Tamil.
SEAB / MOE sourceSource: MOE — PSLE scoring system
From 2026, pupils with AL1 or AL2 in Mother Tongue, or a Distinction or Merit in Higher Mother Tongue, at the PSLE can take Higher Mother Tongue in Secondary 1, whatever their overall PSLE Score.

The practical consequence: for the PSLE Score, Standard Tamil is the paper that counts, and the oral is a quarter of it. Time on Higher Tamil should not come out of oral practice.
Who takes it
Who can take Higher Tamil, and when is it decided?
Schools offer it once, at the end of P4, based on results, and each school sets its own cut-offs. Schools review it again at the end of P5.
Schools offer Higher Mother Tongue for P5 once, at the end of P4, based on results. The cut-offs are set by each school, and schools review it again at the end of P5.

Deciding
How should we decide about Higher Tamil?
Weigh the extra load against what it offers your child, and keep Standard Tamil, oral included, as the priority for the PSLE Score.
Questions worth asking · PSLEPrep’s advice

PSLEPrep is not affiliated with SEAB or MOE. Every exam fact on this page links to its source: SEAB's published syllabuses first, then MOE school documents and MOE-hosted teacher research, labelled by how strong the evidence is.
