PSLE Tamil oral · Prelim to exam · Checked 30 October 2026

From the prelim to the PSLE Tamil oral.

The school prelim oral and the PSLE oral are usually only a few weeks apart. Used well, the prelim tells you exactly what to practise in that gap. This page is a calm plan for those weeks, not a countdown.

The timing

When are the prelim and the PSLE oral?

Schools usually hold the P6 prelim Tamil oral in July. The PSLE Mother Tongue orals have been held in mid-August. SEAB publishes each year’s dates in its exam calendar; use that, not a website, for your child’s date.

The PSLE Mother Tongue orals were held on 13 and 14 August in 2024 and 2025, and on 12 and 13 August in 2026. SEAB publishes each year's dates in its exam calendar.

Reading the prelim

What should we take from the prelim result?

One thing: which part lost marks. Ask the teacher whether it was the reading or the conversation, and in the conversation, whether answers were too short or needed too much prompting.

Questions to ask the teacher · PSLEPrep’s advice

  1. Which part lost more marks: reading aloud or the conversation?
  2. In the reading: hesitation, skipped words, or volume?
  3. In the conversation: answers too short, too little reasoning, or freezing at follow-ups?
  4. Is there one thing to practise between now and the PSLE?

The weeks between

What should practice look like between the prelim and the PSLE?

Short, regular and aimed at the one weakness the prelim showed. Ten minutes on most days does more than a long weekend session.

Four short weeks · PSLEPrep’s advice

  1. Week 1: fix the weakness the prelim showed, and nothing else.
  2. Week 2: a full rehearsal with preparation time, two or three times, then the fix again.
  3. Week 3: mixed practice: a passage and a clip each session.
  4. Week 4 and the last days: keep it light. One or two short sessions to stay warm. Nothing new.

The day

What helps on the day of the oral?

Sleep, breakfast and arriving calm matter more than a last-minute drill. In the room, the preparation time is your child’s most useful tool, so they should use all of it.

Two 2023 school briefings say the 10 minutes of preparation covers the passage and the video together, and that the clip can be watched more than once in that time. An earlier briefing describes it differently, and SEAB's Tamil syllabus could not be read, so check with your child's school.

Since 2017 the oral for Standard and Foundation Mother Tongue Languages has been taken as an e-Oral: the passage and the video appear on a computer screen.

For your child, in the room · PSLEPrep’s advice

  1. Read the passage silently first. Decide where the sentences break.
  2. Watch the clip for its theme: what is it about, and was it good or bad?
  3. Think of one real example from your own life before the questions start.
  4. Speak loudly enough to be heard. Keep going after a slip.

Tamil oral practice is not built yet

Your email address, and nothing else. We do not ask for your child’s name, school or level.

PSLEPrep scores PSLE English oral practice today: reading aloud and a conversation, with feedback a parent can read.

FAQ

Common questions

When is the PSLE Tamil oral in 2027?View answer

SEAB had not published the 2027 dates when this page was last checked. The Mother Tongue orals were held on 13 and 14 August in 2024 and 2025, and on 12 and 13 August in 2026.

When is the P6 prelim Tamil oral?View answer

Schools set their own prelim dates. Every school document we read from 2024 to 2026 held it in July, mostly in the middle or second half of the month.

What should my child do the night before the oral?View answer

Very little: a short warm-up at most, then rest. Nothing new learned the night before will help as much as a good night's sleep.

About this page

PSLEPrep is not affiliated with SEAB or MOE. Every exam fact on this page links to its source: SEAB's published syllabuses first, then MOE school documents and MOE-hosted teacher research, labelled by how strong the evidence is. Other figures come from SingStat and NIE. Where a source has not published something — the 2027 dates, the marking descriptors — we say so rather than guess.
