P5 Tamil oral · Checked 30 October 2026

The Tamil oral in P5: the end-of-year exam and a plan for the year.

There is no PSLE in P5, but most schools examine the Tamil oral at the end of the year in the PSLE format. That makes P5 a full rehearsal year, if you use it.

The P5 oral

What does the P5 Tamil oral look like?

In most schools, the same as the PSLE: a passage to read aloud and a conversation about a short video clip, usually 20 and 30 marks at Standard level. A few schools hold the Foundation oral as a term assessment instead.

The P5 year

Why does the P5 end-of-year exam matter?

With no mid-year exam, the end-of-year exam is the biggest assessment of P5, and the school reviews each child’s subject combination at the end of P5. The oral is one part of one subject in that picture, not a verdict on its own.

MOE removed mid-year examinations at every primary level by 2023. P5 was one of the first levels to lose them.

In two schools' published plans, the P5 end-of-year exam carried 55% of the year's Mother Tongue marks, with three smaller weighted assessments making up the rest. Weightings are set by each school.

Under Subject-Based Banding, the school recommends a subject combination from your child's P4 end-of-year results and you fill in an option form. Children who pass three or more subjects in P4 are offered four Standard subjects; those who pass two or fewer are offered a choice that can include Foundation subjects. The school reviews the combination at the end of P5 and adjusts it if needed.

A plan for P5

How should we use P5?

Build habits in the first half of the year and rehearse the format in the second. Twenty minutes a week is enough. It adds up to a year more practice than starting in P6.

P5, term by term · PSLEPrep’s advice

  1. Term 1: reading aloud three times a week, five minutes each. Nothing else.
  2. Term 2: add one clip a week. Watch it, then talk about it for a minute.
  3. Term 3: practise the three question shapes: what happened, your own experience, your opinion with a reason.
  4. Term 4: rehearse the format before the end-of-year exam, with preparation time. Then read the result as a breakdown, not a grade.

After the exam, ask the teacher which part lost marks: the reading or the conversation. That one answer tells you what to work on in P6.
